I acknowledge with respect that as a pediatric audiologist I work, teach, and reside on the traditional territories of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. Victoria, the city, stands as the second oldest in Western Canada, having been incorporated on August 2, 1862. This land has long served as the home of the Lekwungen People, a part of the Coast Salish, known today as the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. The Lekwungen language, indigenous to Victoria, along with the traditional culture, have thrived here for millennia, marked by careful stewardship of the land, including practices such as controlled burnings and the cultivation of food.
